Marathon offers a full range of social services including hospital, highschool, public and catholic schools, medical and dental clinics. A modern police and fire station is located next to the new town municipal office. The town is served by two main shopping areas.

Marathon has a modern recreation facility which includes an indoor swimming pool and ice rink, and a theatre playing recent releases. A recreation hall downtown contains a community hall, meeting rooms for senior citizen's club and a bowling alley. On the way into town you drive past an excellent 9 hole golf course and in the winter it has excellent cross country ski trails. On the highway at the visitor information centre is the downhill skiing facilities.

Fishing and hunting in the area is excellent. You can fish on Lake Superior or one of the many inland lakes and rivers in the area. Fall hunting for various small and big game is also great. From grouse to moose and black bear, you will have your choice.

One of Canada's newest national parks - Pukaskwa, is located just east of Marathon right on the northshore of Lake Superior. Hiking, mountain biking, or paddling, if you enjoy the outdoors, you will enjoy your visit to Marathon and the Peninsula Inn can make you stay here comfortable.
